Access your dreams

We think that we make clear decisions when we have multiple facts to hand. The truth is that we limit our mental powers when only thinking logically. The best decisions are made when we call on our unconscious brain to help us.

Dreams, meditation and relaxation techniques all enable us to get centred, back to a core place for calm decision-making where we can access the power of the unconscious. Dreams, in particular, are an untapped source to engage our creativity and open up new ideas.

If we want to dream more, we need to cultivate good sleeping habits. Instead of working right up to bedtime on the computer, watching TV or talking with friends, it helps to allow more ‘down time’ - another half an hour to relax and quieten down your thoughts. Cutting out stimulants like caffeine and alcohol also makes a difference.

Leading scientists such as Descartes and Einstein attributed their breakthroughs to their ability to dream. As we process our dreams, the insights we gain can help us to solve any problem. If you have a dilemma that you’re trying to solve, before going to sleep invite your unconscious mind to provide you with solutions as you sleep. Simply say to yourself before you go to sleep: ‘Please help me with …’ naming the issue you’re struggling with. Then, in the morning as you wake, stay in bed a extra few minutes to recall dreams or thoughts about your issue.

Psychologists suggest that only 20 per cent of our dreams have a positive emotional tone. Even scary dreams act as a reminder of the deep concerns worth heeding and offer a space to explore and to respond through the mechanism of the dream.
